Pack Men
Brief: The fourth novel by leading Scottish novelist Alan Bissett. Set against the backdrop of Glasgow Rangers UEFA Cup final appearance in 2008, the book explores male relationships and tackles the thorny issue of sectarianism. The design had to be eye-catching and in a graphic style to fit with the designs for Bissett’s previous work I had done previously – Death of a ladies’ Man and Boyracers.
Result: The title plays upon the popular 80s arcade game Pacman, with the subtle change alluding to the pack mentality of football fans. I used the graphic style of Pacman with the uniformity of crowds of football fans, to create a Union Jack flag – a key symbol for Glasgow Rangers fans and also a firm unionist symbol.
